Rotation of fibers in wood
Function
The rotation of the fibers enables better supply to the crown of the tree during dry times.
Biological mechanism
The distribution of fluid flows occurs through the extension of flow length. Each root connects to all branches of the tree via fluid flow in fibers arranged spirally around the trunk axis. A steeper angle of inclination facilitates the distribution of water from locally irrigated roots to a larger area of the crown, maximizing the photosynthesis process. These individual fibers interconnect through pits, allowing water to flow into the crown. Placed on the radial surfaces of the fibers, these pits minimize turbulent flow.
bioWcactus
We replicate the biological mechanism through a digital and 3D-printed resin biomimetic prototype, simulating the distribution of fluid from a single localized source evenly across the entire area. In a simplified model, it consists of a spiral arrangement of hollow segments within a column, interconnected by side openings in the walls for fluid conduction. Our goal is to apply this innovative design principle to various fields, achieving similar functionality through biomimetic design. Taking inspiration from Drocco & Mello’s iconic Cactus coat hanger for Gufram in 1972, the Design team transformed its original form into an artistic design installation. This art piece highlights the significance of spiral orientation in internal structures and integrates biomimetic models. The purpose of this installation is to emphasize how advancements in technology, materials, and construction can drive design evolution and positively impact sustainability, potentially leading to low-energy and zero-waste innovations.

BioWDesign Gallery 2024
We present the initial outcomes of the project at the intersection of art and science.
Our intention is to showcase the results of the scientific phase of the project in a creative manner. Our outputs consist of biomimetic models. These prototypes exhibit fascinating features. They are beautiful, possess remarkable properties, and, at first glance, appear as organic artifacts to designers. We sought a way to bring their future applications closer to designers and the public, and we chose a unique approach. You will become acquainted with our models through a distinctive scene.
We have selected iconic pieces – legends of 20th-century furniture design. They will come to life in the BIOWDESIGN GALLERY 2024 in a transformed, visionary art form. We intend to pay homage to renowned designers and the era in which these iconic pieces were created. Through their historical creations, we will provide a glimpse of a path for the future.
